Over the last week, two important things have happened.
First and foremost, DrekiTech has a new office! We’re currently getting set up in our new building, which has a superior studio space for filming video reviews. The move was unexpected, but overall will be a good thing as our old space was dim and had poor acoustics. The move has resulted in a lack of new content over the last two weeks. Hang tight – a guide to the best unlocked smartphones will be posted soon as well as a few new reviews of various tech products.
Secondly, DrekiTech has a new achievement. We are now officially an Amazon Top 100 reviewer on Amazon Canada! With higher visibility, DrekiTech will get to test more products and help you find the tech you need.
All of this is very exciting, and hopefully with our new location we will be able to create more informative reviews and guides to buying the best budget and brand name technology. Thanks for visiting, and see you soon.
If you live in a major Canadian city there may be some good news for you. Mobilicity, who was recently bought out by Rogers Communication, is offering a $40/month unlimited talk/text/data plan until the end of August. Mobile Syrup suggests that the buyout will proceed like Fido and Chatr, where customers on Mobilicity will have their plan rate honoured once the network transition is completed in the fall. What this means is if you sign up on this plan and are able to put up with spotty coverage for a few months, you’ll come out of the transition with an inexpensive unlimited plan.
If you do choose to go this route, there are a few things you should note:
- Coverage on Rogers network after the transition may be limited to the Mobilicity zones – outside of these areas would be roaming and incur further charges. When Rogers bought Fido, they eventually offered a $5 add-on for Canada Wide coverage but there’s no guarantee that will happen.
- You will not be able to get subsidized/free devices on these plans
- Unlimited data speed may be throttled to 3G
- Rogers may choose to not honour Mobilicity plans or cancel them at any time
If you’re willing to take a gamble more information about the promotional plan can be found here. This promotion is available until the end of August.
DrekiTech has contacted Mobilicity and Rogers for more information but has not yet received a reply.
Today I went into the Virgin Mobile store and was casually browsing for a new phone. I’ve got a mid-tier plan that originally offered a $300 subsidy in return for signing a two year contract. While this isn’t the biggest subsidy out there, it still was a substantial chunk off of any device and for the monthly price I am paying, $45.00 CAD, it offered a fair trade between up front device cost and monthly charges.

There are many amazing deals on products sourced outside of North America available online. A lot of these products are fantastic, but there are some things to keep in mind when purchasing a product from the lesser-known brands:

This deal has expired, but it’s still a great buy at $169.99.
Transcend currently has their 512GB SSD on sale for $139.99 US.
I remember about this time last year when I picked up a much smaller SSD for this price. This is a great deal on a well reviewed SSD. Better order fast! This deal ends in 12h at the time of posting.

In Canada, the 256GB SSD is on sale for $109 CAD. Not as good of a deal as the 512GB, but still not too shabby.

While browsing Youtube today for reviews of a phone I want to buy, I stumbled across something I had long since put out of my mind: drop test videos. In case you don’t know what drop test videos are, allow me to explain.

Rating: 1/5
Pros:
Cons:
- Subpar overall photo quality
- Poor exposure
- Slow Autofocus
- Atrocious front-facing camera
- Bad video
Summary: The Blu Win Jr has one of the worst cameras I’ve seen on a Smartphone made in the last 6 years. The front camera is somehow even worse than that. The camera requires the utmost care to get images that are acceptable and may not even be useful in an emergency.
